Giant City State Park is a lush, scenic, historic, and wondrous location to begin an adventure, and this starts a new trip taken in spring of 2023. This was my second time here after first visiting in 2021 on a rather tight time schedule which didn't allow me to fully investigate all the areas that interested me. This time, I allowed two days to check out the area more fully. It still wasn't really enough time, but I did get to see considerably more than in 2021. Southern Illinois has many iconic locations in this region, and I will show some of them on this trip. This particular entry is of one of the trails at the park, the Stonefort Trail.
While here at Giant City, I also had known of a place named Cairo, Illinois, but had never been there. So I traveled there to see and learn more. I wrote this article about it after visiting. It is a rather interesting place, to put it mildly. Available videos and other more comprehensive pictures show far more than I can with my pictures, and my visit was cut short somewhat by the fact that I wasn't prepared for how devastated this area really is. A certain discomfort surrounds Cairo; something I hadn't foreseen before actually being there. Still, there is a considerable amount of history about the place, and some of the houses and buildings that still exist are a real treasure to behold.
Some of the attractions were completely unexpected while others were researched ahead of time and I had a pretty good idea of what I would see. I have divided up these articles like previous entries - by attraction. I hope you enjoy the pictures!
